As a beginning teacher you want to ensure that you are teaching your students in the most effective way but you are dreaming if you think there will be enough time for you to research the theoretical ideas of every subject area that you will be teaching. This site has done all the research for you about teaching comprehension to primary school children and includes some practical ideas that you may find useful to implement into your lessons to help with your teaching of reading comprehension. The lessons are based on grade 5 AusVels but I have made the lessons very open-ended so that they are easily adapted for any grade level. I have not provided specific children's literature because the lessons should be able to cater for your own professional book choices. Don't forget that digital resources and the internet should also be used as the reading source.
Below is some of the curriculum descriptors that this digital resource covers in regards to reading comprehension for Grade 5. Many of my reading activities could be paired with other areas of the curriculum to create an integrated lesson.
Show how ideas and points of view in texts
are conveyed through the use of vocabulary, including idiomatic expressions,
objective and subjective language, and that these can change according to
context (ACELY1698)
Recognise that ideas in literary texts
can be conveyed from different viewpoints, which can lead to different kinds
of interpretations and responses
(ACELT1610)
Understand how texts vary in purpose, structure
and topic as well as the degree of formality (ACELA1504)
Navigate and read texts for specific purposes
applying appropriate text processing strategies, for example predicting and
confirming, monitoring meaning, skimming and scanning(ACELY1702)
Use comprehension strategies to analyse
information, integrating and linking ideas from a variety of print
and digital sources (ACELY1703)
Identify and explain characteristic text
structures and language features used in imaginative, informative and persuasive texts to meet the purpose of
the text (ACELY1701)
