A great way to help teach the nine successful strategies is by using the SQ3R Strategy (Survey Question Read Recite Review). This strategy looks at reading as a whole and provides students with successful skills to monitor their understandings of text before, during and after reading.
The SQR Theory
- S, Survey, reading introductions, major headings, summaries, margin notes and illustrations before reading the text
-Q, Question, means that the readers ask themselves a question about the meaning of text: What is the main idea? What are the key points of an argument?
-R, Read, requires reading the paragraph, chapter or whole text to find the answer to the questions posed.
-R, Recite, means that the reader tries to recite briefly what is learnt-the answer to the question posed, any main point or detail
-R, Review, means that the reader checks the notes, summaries, and understandings gained from reading the text.
